IGFF projects

Aquaponic food production

Commercial aquaponics in the horticulture industry (2016)

IGFF has been given the task of analyzing the prospects of setting up a real commercial Aquaponics Business case model applied to the Horticulture Industry. The project is funded by the Copenhagen Wholesale Market, which is the trading and distribution center for fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants in Denmark

Refarmed – Symbiosis (2015-16)

IGFF has together with the shopping center Fields Copenhagen and Refarmed.dk received funding under the Green Industrial Symbiosis scheme [Danish: Grøn Industrisymbiose] administrated by the Danish Business Authority [Danish: Erhvervsstyrelsen], to examine the possibility of establishing an urban roof-top farm in relation to Field’s rooftop area of 6.000 m2. It is planned to establish 1000 m2 of raised beds and a 400-m2 greenhouse. Refarmed.dk and IGFF will utilize the residual biomass from the restaurants, cafés and various food outlets in Fields, and recycle it back to the urban farm re-selling food products to the food vendors of Fields as well locally. The organic residuals from the food vendors will be utilized in a composting plant producing topsoil for the urban farm production. The greenhouse production will be based on IGFF’s organic aquaponic food system producing a large variety of greens and herbs together with fish for consumption.

European Aquaponics funded by the EU Leonardo da Vinci exchange program (2013-15)

The partnership between Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Spain focus on building a European network for future development of commercial aquaponics systems in Europe. The relevant staff will be involved in the development and training activities. Furthermore, the staff will be responsible for evaluation of the vocational training tested during the project period.

ECOPONICS funded by the EU Eco-innovation program (2013-16)

EcoPonics joins three innovation companies from Denmark, Iceland and Spain, respectively, collaborating with the University of Iceland with the aim to implement commercial and competitive Aquaponics production systems in all three participating countries

Aquaponics feasibility study funded by GAU [The Danish Horticultural Marketing Board] (2013-14)

Economic feasibility study on the symbiotic effects between aqua- and horticulture production when combined in aquaponics. The broader objective of the study is to assess the economic and environmental prospects of installing future modules of for example aquaculture production modules to already existing large-scale horticulture production systems.

Aquaponics NOMA funded by Nordic Marine/Nordic Innovation (2013-15)

Promotion of a scientific and commercial aquaponics cluster with Demo-production plants in the Nordic region. In Denmark IGFF Ltd. will install and urban roof top farm based on aquaponics focusing on short food chain marketing that connects and illustrates how urban food production can deliver environmental goods and services with ambitious green city planning.

Organic value chains and pro-poor development

Progrov funded by Danida (2011-16)

Urban agriculture

IGFF is targeting urban agriculture as its new area of knowledge building and project development. Our expertise has meant a growing demand for our lectures/publications/media on social innovations for urban food chains. IGFF can provide important insights on governance processes, urban policy planning, property right conflicts and economic incentives promoting a sustainable production behavior by urban farm actors
